New Fabric & Sock Yarn!

So I ordered some fabric from Sew Mama Sew on Tuesday, and it has arrived! I'm so excited, I ordered some fabric for a lap quilt from Bend the Rules Sewing Isn't it beauteous? I just love it, I also ordered some assorted fabrics for no project in particular. I'm currently using the blue and green fabric for a tablecloth, and the rest perhaps napkins? Pillows? Another quilt? I don't have it earmarked, I bought it because it was so lovely I could not help myself!

The other EXCITING news is that I just received my first skein of yarn from the Rockin' Sock Club. Can I tell you? I did a happy dance all around the living room when I opened that delicious package! The yarn is so beautiful and soft and lovely, I cannot wait to start knitting up a pair of sockies! I even let the dogs sniff the emergency mini skein of yarn. They both liked the the skein so much they wanted to eat it! It's wonderful! I'd post a picture of it, but I'm not sure what the rules are as far as doing something like that since it's an exclusive colorway. I'll have to check. But in the mean time, I'll post a picture of the gloves I knit for my Faux Sister-in-law, S. Oh! I almost forgot, here's a pic of the package my fabric came in! Never mind that book in the background, I was looking at recipes when the Mail-woman came. I was so excited, I cracked that package open and plopped the fabric down for a pic!

Hey! Hey! Did you know? I'm an idiot! Seriously. I was at a department store the other night and found a pair of little ankle boots for $15.00, I pulled one of the little booties out and tried it on, perfect fit! So threw it back in the box, grabbed some sneakers for Ry and headed for check out. The clerk pulled both the boots looked for a tag and, after pulling another pair of boots for the price tag, rang me up and out the door I went! Fast forward to this morning, I pulel those fab little booties out of their box, slapped one one the left foot, and grabbed the other little bootie to slap it on the right. Well, lo and behold, I found myself with two left boots. Yeah. I didn’t check to be sure that they were a set of boots for a normal human pair of feet. So now I have to run back over to that store to exchange them. I hope & pray that they have a box in the same size that has two rights in it!

Hello My Friends!

HI there! I'm feeling better. I no longer have The Consumption. Now I have pain in the ass law school. Why still here if it's such a pain in the ass? Sheer pride and strength of will. But, I digress, I'm really here to tell you that I was the crazy one at Ry's parent house. See, Ry has 2 sisters, S & K who are sweet, and my FMIL (Faux Mother In Law), S, K and I were discussing the new babies that re being born to Ry's 2 cousins. So, FMIL asks,"So, girls, will you nurse?" K said no and that it was disgusting, S said it was disgusting but she'd do it because it's healthiest for the baby, and I said, Heck ya, why not, if we weren't supposed to nurse, we wouldn't have boobs, it the most natural thing in the world! So then FMIL asked about diapers, both girls shouted Pampers, and I said cloth. I was looked at like I had two heads. But come on. Wrapping a new fresh baby up in toxic chemicals? No thanks. Not to mention the fact that cloth is less expensive, better for the environment, babies with cloth diapers potty train sooner and there are so many more options for cloth diapering now than there were even ten years ago. Well, I'm pretty sure S and K think I'm crazy, but my FMIL, might be convinced. She cloth diapered both Ry & S. We'll see.

Anyway, I knitted a pair of mittens for S, and she LOVED them. The were a big hit, and FMIL asked for a pair for next year, so I promised a pair to her. Maybe I'll knit socks for FFIL and then they'll be taken care of, with just two little projects! Woo-hoo! So that was my weekend, that and I swatched up for my mitten pals mittens. Tomorrow, knitting group with Deb! Yay!

The Consumption

I swear I had the consumption. Not TB, mind you, but The Consumption where you cough delicately into hankies and waste away on your chaise lounge, while your beloved says things like "Darling! Don't leave me, I cannot go on without you."

Hmmm...well maybe it was just a bad cold. The only thing delicate about my wheezing, coughing, feverish, mucus filled body, was that even when sick I am still a delicate flower. (Hahahaha! Those of you that know me, may laugh as well.)

Well, before coming down with the consumption, Ry and I went to L&C's wedding. What a beautiful event! From the Church to the reception everything reflected L's sense of style, it was very posh and elegant. Of course, you know that the Beautiful Bride, l, cried, but so did C, C's mom and C's little brother (also the best man), as did L's little sister (also the maid of honor). It was lovely and adorable all those happy tears of the friends and family of the bride & groom. Ry kept looking at me to see if I was crying, I didn't and I think that may have disappointed him! I'm not much of a teary-eyed gal, I never have been. (There are only four movies that I cry at every time I see them.) So the ceremony was beautiful and the reception was just lovely, it was at the Foxhill Inn in CT and it was just amazing, the lighting was perfect and they had these beautiful winter decorations up, and, best of all, a coat check! (How I LOVE a coat check!)

We had a wonderful time, drank far too much and were shockingly hungover the next day. Therefore we used the Patented (not really) JC Hangover Method: #1 Devour some kind of greasy breakfast at your local diner, #2 drink massive amounts of Orange Soda and #3 watch and afternoon of John Candy movies, beginning with Uncle Buck. Do this for the entire day in order to feel human again.

So that was the first weekend of January and then I fell sick, started classes again, finished mittens for Ry's sister, finished one mitten for my Mom and that's it, my friends! I have just been so bogged down with work (not school work, but work-work), that I haven't really done anything too fun, but Ry & I promised each other that in February, when work calms down, we're going skiing! Yay! I've also joined the 2nd round of the No More Hum-Drum Mittens Swap, and I am very excited about beginning a new mitten project, AND I've joined the Rockin' Sock Club! I am very excited about the RSC, I have been coveting their yarn for so long and have been unable to decide on a color or pattern that I am looking forward to letting the ladies at Blue Moon Fiber Arts decide for me!

How long have you been knitting & how did you learn?
I am a self-taught knitter and have been knitting since October of 2006.


Would you consider your skill level to be beginner, intermediate or advanced?
I would consider myself an intermediate knitter who is always up for a challenge!

What are your favorite colors? Any you dislike?
I really love all colors, especially reds, turquoises, greens and purples. I don't like mustards or olive greens.

Do you like Latvian type patterns? If so, what are your favorite patterns?

I love all of the the Latvian type patterns, but no real favorite.

Do you desire mittens for yourself, your "special someone else" or your child?
For me!

What is the measurement from your wrist to the tip of your longest finger?
About 7.25 inches

What is the circumference of your hand at it's widest point?
About 7.5 inches

What other things do you enjoy knitting?
I also enjoy knitting socks, sweaters and hats.

What sort of needles do you enjoy working with? (straights vs circs, bamboo vs aluminum)
I really enjoy working with wooden and plastic needles. I mostly work with my Denise needles for Hats and sweaters, and wooden Brittany DPNs and Pony DPNS for socks and mittens.

What’s one project you’ve not yet tried but are dying to make?
The Bird in Hand mittens, Clapotis, and The Firestarter socks.

What’s one yarn you’ve not yet tried but are dying to work with?
Koigu, I have never used it, but have always wanted to.

What other hobbies do you have? Do you spin? Sew? Garden? Cook?
I sew, bake and cook.

Besides yarn, do you collect anything?
I love Matroyshka dolls, especially weird ones. (Like the Elvis set I have.)

What kind of goodies do you enjoy? Sweets? Salty? Anything you hate or are allergic to?
I enjoy baked goods, hot chocolate, and sweet/salty combos. I don't have any food allergies, and the only things I don't like are liver, kidney and blood pudding. ugh.

Do you have any kids? Pets?
No kids and two dogs.

What is your favorite part of Winter?
Snuggling up under the blankets with my sweetie, building snowmen and playing in the snow with the dogs.

What is your least favorite part of Winter?
The endless gray skies.

Happy New Year

I find that at the start of the New Year, particularly a landmark year (like 16,18,21,25, etc.), I tend to become a little down in the mouth. This past year has been a wonderful year, we added a new dog to the family, we celebrated our second anniversary and our first anniversary of living together. We became close friends with new people, we fought and made up and strove to be better people. In this up coming year I will be turning 30, it's a milestone, to be sure, and I look back at those lists I made when I was younger thinking about how different my life is as compared to what my expectations were. When I was 16, I though I'd be married with 3 children by now; when I was 18 I thought I'd be married with at least two children and established in my career; when I was 21 I thought I'd be married with one child and have an established career; when I was 25 I thought I'd be established in my career and perhaps be married, but that I would never ever have children. Now, here comes 30, and I have changed my career path from art to law, been engaged and then not engaged, and am now living with my Love in freezing cold New England talking about buying houses and watching my friends and cousins get married and have babies. It is very different from where I thought I'd be and what I thought I'd be doing by now. This stark difference is all the more apparent with the impending marriage of L & C this weekend. They are young, beautiful and starry eyed in love, an sharp difference from Ry & I who are older, wiser, more tired and more practical. (i.e. In response to expensive invitations: "I can totally do that myself, I'm crafty." When hearing about the lovely table decorations being done by a florist "That sounds easy, I bet I could get everything at Michael's or a wholesale place on-line for half the cost and put them together in no time!") (***Of course, everything was sooo beautiful, on second thought, I'm not sure I could ave done any of it myself!***)
So they are marrying at the weekend in what promises to be a lovely affair, I finally bought a dress today for the event. (Green, an appropriate color, don't you think?)I will be borrowing black pumps from a friend of mine and have a black wrap to cover my unsightly arms (it is winter after all). I think it will be a lovely event, but I know myself, and I know that I am about 80% happy for them and about 20%jealous. It's okay, I know that their path is not the same as mine, but sometimes that smidgen of jealousy wells up inside me and and makes me a little sad.
That being said, I ma looking forward to this year. Ry graduates from law school, we're taking our first long vacation together, I'm going skiing for the first time and law school is winding down. So even though, I'm a teeny bit sad and a teeny bit jealous, I am also excited for a year of firsts, first time skiing, Ry's first job as an attorney and our first real vacation together. So, Happy New Year I hope you all have something to look forward to, despite the little stumbling blocks that we all come across.
